I'm going to start piecing together my Heer uniform and have been concerned about how hot I would get in wool. I live in St. Louis, Missouri and it gets about 80-103* here in the summer, but very cold in the winter. I'm not sure what would be the best type of uniform. Please give me your opinions.

Yea I live in MI and it can also get pretty hot in the summer. I've been wearing wool with no problems. If it gets too hot I'll probably just wear the tunic with no shirt under and roll my sleeves up.

buy 2 tunics. when i was down in Tennessee, the Wool trousers weren't all that bad, until you have to take them off.
but i think the bast awanser is to buy 2 tunics, one for summer events, and the other for cool temapture games.
i plan to try out my new HBTs at the Fort McCoy game.

You could always just get the summer tunic, and when its winter wear something under it like those tight black shirts and pants you wear skiing I cant remember what they are called. Anyway you can make something warmer but you cant make it cooler just remember that.

If it were me I'd buy the wool tunic first then get HBT. If you have the money get both at the same time.

How about wear what they wore? Its simple,AND historically correct. Look at PERIOD pictures of the impression you are doing,or want to do. Don't ask another reenactor what to wear, because chances are, they are wrong.

Riiighht... Anyways If your first couple games are in the summer look at an HBT uniform first then get a wool later on if you want to go that route and you are covered for both.
Having said that I never had much problem with Wool during spring/fall and winter down here in the South I thought I would but it wasn't too bad in the warm weather plus I was glad to have the wool in the winter even down here. I imagine up in your area of the world you are more close to the climate that the ETO was fought in where in the south we are closer to the MTO kind of a climate.

If you can not get both at the same time (having both would be best), I would recommend getting the wool tunic first. Couple reasons...
1) I also live in MO and I know how hot it gets. From what I have seen over the years games die down in the summer because of the heat. So chances are you will be playing when the heat is not as bad and would then not have to worry about the wool/heat factor.
2) Make sure to get a service shirt, which is what you are supposed to wear under the tunic. If it does get to hot out, you can always take off your tunic and just wear the service shirt. This is not the best option by far, but it works.
3) I have played in the heat with a wool tunic. Although I do not recommend it, it can be done.
Last, as Fusilier pointed out I would recommend looking at period pics and try to be as accurate as possible with your impression. Just about every pic you will find soldiers are wearing a tunic appropriate for where they are. I.E. winter parkas in winter, wool tunics in spring/fall/summer and hbt in summer or desert climates.
Good luck on putting together your impression! ;D

Thank you for all of the great advice, especially that of Fillies(Sorry if I spelled that wrong). I will purchase my wool uniform first and then see if I can take the heat, if it gets too hot I just won't play that day. As for the period and type of soldier I plan on impersonating, I plan on being a Here Overwrite with an Mg-42, of the 12th Infantries Ind Volgograd Division. That division fought on both fronts from the war's start and end and has a good combat record. As for the year of service i was thinking 1942-43. I know that Mg-42s may not have been issued widely except in Waffle-SS divisions until late 1943(Information from my Grandfather, who was a King Tiger and Cadger commander), i am not all that concerned. I was also pondering over the idea of starting my own unit for anybody that wants to join. I imagine that most of the battles will be held at Bing Field if i actually create a unit of the 12 Infantries; it seems like there isn't enough people to create a unit in the area but who knows. Anyways, my uniform and equipment list is as follows: M36 or M40 Wool Tunic with Here Infantry Insignia and Overwrite Rank Chevrons M37 or M42 Wool Trousers Here belt and buckle Machine-gunner's Pouch Bread bag Jack Boots Canteen Mg34/42 Ammunition Can(air soft Mg42 is tube-fed) M43 Here field cap Air soft Mg-42 Of course I might change my mind from now and the time I purchase all of this. If there are people wanting to join a 12. Inferior Unit I might have to bump myself up to a Senior NCO rank or maybe 1st Lieutenant, but I'll just have to see how that goes.

Wools arent so bad, I live in Hell and wear wools during the summer. Once they are drenched in sweat, they keep you rather cool. Good choice on getting them first.

Scratch out my last post. I made a few mistakes on what my uniform and gear is. This is the final shopping list: M43 Wool Tunic w/ basic Heer Insignia M43 Wool Trousers Heer Belt and Buckle Y-Straps Bread bag Canteen Machine Gunner's Pouch Obergefreiter Tank Chevrons(Late War) E-Tool w/ Leather Cover Dummy Machine gun rounds and belt(If I can find one) Is there anything that I should have besides this? I'm not getting an A-Frame, too expensive for me, but anything else a MGer might need? My Grandfather hasn't been much help on infantry uniforms and gear.

Just wear the wools. Its period correct and really not that bad as long as you keep your canteen close.

Wool actually breathes whereas some HBT fabrics can actually be sweatier as it's so close woven.
I'd go for wool personally. In summer in Russia it was *very* hot in some areas and the guys fought with buttons undone, sleeves rolled up and occasionally trousers *over* jack boots rather than tucked in to improve airflow. You're clearly doing Heer so this is a bit of a moot point but I've seen pics off SS troops wearing the smock with no tunic or shirt before!
I've battled in all weather in the UK and usually been ok. I got mild heatstroke once but that was spending all day out on the hottest day of the year in wool shirt, wool BD, denison smock, steel helmet and fighting order webbing - then taking part running about in the public blank fire battle!

Go with wool. I have worn wool in 90+ degrees and have been just as comfortable in then as I have in my tropical uniform (not HBTs).
If you get hot, do what they did and wear no shirt underneath the Feldbluse.
