Does anybody know who got issued an M1911? In Band of Brothers, you can see that privates have them too. Or is it a "if you can get your hands on one." I'm sure NCO's got them. Any word on this would be appreciated!

Typically the .45 was issued to individuals for crew served weapons: Motar, MG.s, Assualt Rocket, ect. Additionly Officers and NCO's would rate them. If your duty did not involve being a rifleman, and you needed to be armed, then the .45 was used. The Carbine was introduced to replace the .45 as it was thought that individuals could easily adapt to a small rifle and shoot it more accurately than the .45. As the war progress, pretty much anyone who could get ahold of one, would tote one.

Near as I've been able to learn from reading, sidearms weren't issued that widely, but a considerable number of paratroopers found ways to acquire them, either private purchase, from family or friends, or the midnight requisition system.

And beware of using 'band of brothers' for anything other than light entertainment... *definitly* not as a resource point/reference.
