I don't think i have any pics , but from what i remember about the 508th, 1st BN had a Fireball, 2nd BN Fire Bolts, 3rd BN Winged Foot, and HHC had a double side to side red H. 82nd Airborne helmet insignia is complicated because they didn't have a set system for marking their helmets as the 101st did.

508th used the Winged foot... I have a few pictures of this but its sorta rare. I have only heard of the thunderbolts and never seen the fireball.

so what would your guy's best bet be? i'm not really sure of what battalion i want to portray if i decide to go for airborne so would you guys suggest just no insignia? would it still be even somewhat authentic?

ok, cool. i'm still not sure if i want to do an 82nd airborne impression, i'm just trying to gather as much info just in case. the 82nd has always fascinated me, and i would love to do one someday. just a quick question: i have a 1945 dated canteen cover, would it be okay for airborne, even if it isn't a mounted version? i really want to use it, but already have one that i plan to use for my d-day impression, and don't want this one to collect dust.

Airborne used both M1910 and M1941(Mounted).

Don't be confused by the "reenactorism" that the airborne were specifically issued the m1941 mounted canteen covers, or that they were even used in substantial numbers for the airborne. The 1941 covers were issued regardless of if you were airborne or not, it all just depended on what the quartermaster had in stock. My guess is that over 95% of the guys used 1910 covers.

Helmet Insignia by the time of Normandy was quite rare with the 82nd so don't put any markings on it. Red

I have only seen one outfit that was still using the painted on insignia by D day. That was the 504th and only the old timers. Newbies to the unit didn't have it. This by the way comes from a veteran Col. Young.

This by the way comes from a veteran Col. Young. Wrong... A LOT of guys in the 3/505th in Sicily and Italy had Cannonballs painted on their helmet. 504th barely used a helmet marking. Also the only guys in the 504th that participated in Normandy were 24 Pathfinders and they did not use helmet markings... some had camoflaged helmets but that was about it. The Skull and cross bones used by the 504th was not that common at all. Red
