put weights in a nerf rocket and cut a hole so a co2 cartrige can fit in it. put a nail o something on the bottm of the tube and when you drop the rocket inthe nail strikes the co2 sending it off

Im not sure the rocket would have the inertia to puncture a hole in the cartrage. You could use a 40mm grenade shell instead of a co2 cartrage but round off the point of the nail at the bottom of the mortar tube.
If realism is'nt all that neccessary, you could make a mortar that uses a bicycle pump to pressurize and a butterfly valve to fire a nerf rocke, or anything you can cram down the barrel!
Could always go with pyrotechnics but that can get sketchy

the CO2 approach mentioned though imaginative fails on at least three counts. one. Mentioned a projectile heavy enough to force a puncture will be too heavy to clear the tube. The second challenge is the pressure released would simply squirt out instead of forcing enough back pressure. finally the projectile if sized to drop down the tube would not create enough of a seal along the tube walls to prevent the gases from just oozing out around the ammo.
for CO2 or any non explosive gas to create sufficient force to work it needs to be released first into some type of expansion chamber and then have a means such as a ball valve to quickly release the pressure. the ammo such as a nerd foam rocket needs to be squeezed in tightly to create enough of a pressure seal to force the explosive type force needed to hurl it through the air.
I have built lots and lots of mortars, cannon, rocket launchers etc and there is no truly inexpensive way to come up with any thing functional and authentic unless you're will to spend some money.

After seeing that crazy new mortar thats out i was thinking of a way to use a water bottle as the mortar shell and powered by water and compressed air like the commercial one but use round sections of rubber that I cut myself to seal under the cap. I was thinking to pressurize the bottles with a bicycle pump and have a schrader valve on the bottle to attach to, but i can't find a place that sells the valves, its housing, and all on a circular rubber base, instead of an entire bicycle innertube. Baking soda and vinigar could possibly be used to obtain pressure but that could be less exact each time and would be more messy.

Sorry about bumping this old post but I came across this video on youtube (although not all that professionally made) showing some kids using the CO2 cartriages like what was mentioned before. Never thought this would work, but heck! I've never tried it! Maybe with a foam tip and some fins, they might be effective and safe projectiles for a very simple mortar.
