As much as I love my Thompson (it's a CYMA), I'm obsessing over having one better. Not just a step above, but as close to the real thing as I can get. I'm even thinking about making one my own out of steel, going so far as to estimate the cost of the material. The problem is I don't have the tools, or the money for the tools. To make matters worse for that option, a good portion of my money I'll make this year will be going to the court system (don't drink and drive kids)..... And I don't think I know anyone who has the tools to do so. But my brain won't stop there, I'm also thinking of modifying the one I've got. I want to have a Thompson that very few others have. As we all know, the most popular Thompson in airsoft is the M1A1. There are a few M1928A1s out there, but they are either the pathetic CYMA/KA version (which I do have an idea for that is historically accurate ) or the conversion kits. But how many M1 Thompsons are there? I haven't seen anyone do it. So, my thought process has come to this conclusion. I will modify my current M1A1 and hope that someday I can make my own. My modifications won't be anything on a grand scale, just buy either a real steel "L" sight or a repro, buy the wood kit, and slap a coat of DuraCoat Parker on it to give it the look of a late/rebuilt M1. Now on to the CYMA M1928 idea. I saw a picture of a GI cleaning a Thompson that is very interesting. It has a non-reinforced butt, M1A1 receivers AND an M1928A1 barrel with the Cutts and horizontal grip. Albeit rare and most likely a rebuild using the parts on hand, it did exist and to me would be the only justification for me buying that particular gun if I ever chose to. www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=127791&hl=ThompsonOk, I'm done rambling

I would shy away from doing the Thompson in that picture. Its just too rare and out of place. Go for the M1 Thompson idea though. I love customizing my weapons. It just gives it that unique and real feel. Too many cookie cutter CYMA tommys out there.
I am nearly done converting my CYMA M1A1 to a 1928a1. I am also modifying my TM M1A1 Thompson. Mainly just a new paint job for it.

Yea I'm definitely planning on the M1 Thompson. What kind of finish are you going to give your M1A1?

I might even go with that myself, thanks for the link. Now I'm debating whether I want a reel steel "L" sight or a repro. www.brpguns.com/1928-m1a1-l-sight/They're selling the reel ones for $20, and I was reading somewhere that most repros are the same in the shape but leave out some details. Like the checkering around the back side of the peep hole, or the the edges are to clean, or the Lyman stamp is too deep. I guess it wouldn't really matter for airsoft, but I like my things to be authentic.

Probably Park Grey or Matt Black depending. Park Grey obviously for a parkerized look and Matt black for a more blued look.
I don't think it would matter much as far as the Lyman sights go. $5 is a big price difference though. I made my own for my 1928 thompson but I'll probably get a real one at some point.
