So my M42 has taken a beating over the course of it's life and although I do like the bit of battered look, it's a little far and just looks bad. What color do I need to match the graugrun (gray-green), and I assume spray painting is a last resort, since I assume they didn't have that back then and I can tell the helmet was hand painted originally.

Nope spray paint is what I would use. Helmets weren't generally handpainted unless it was a "in the field" job. Later in the war either 1942 or 1943 they started texturing the helmets with alminume oxide. You can get correct paint from 1944 militaria. They come in spray bottles.
