I saw the Blue Max (1966) in a theater way, way back ( I was still in high school or first year of college). haven't seen since. Ran across some clips on Youtube, so I rented the Dvd tonight. I'd forgotten how good it was. Being 1966, all the airplanes and flying sequences were real. According to Wikipedia most of the airplanes were DH Tiger Moths or Stampe SV4's made up to look vintage, but they also built two Pfalz DIII's, three Fokker DVII's and two Fokker DR1 triplanes. The flying was done by pilots from the Irish air force (the film was shot in Ireland).

Unlike a lot of the older war movies that just weren't that good this one was excellent.

On a related note, I rented "The Red Baron" last night, a German production from 2008. Overall well done, I thought. It got some bad reviews, though, especially from aviation buffs. Too much talk, too little flying. They also left out or went too quickly over some key incidents, including, strangely, von Richthoffen's last flight. Von Richthoffen takes off, and in the next scene his (fictitious) girl friend is visiting his grave. With all the controversy about who really shot him down and such you'd think that would be a major scene. Also some fairly implausible occurences, like vR making a forced landing in no man's land and meeting Roy Brown (who will later shoot him down), who's also crash landed. Lots of CGI for the flying scenes, which was pretty well done, though some of the reviews criticized it for having the airplanes flying too fast. Not that most people would notice. Sets and costuming were excellent. Worth watching if you like costume dramas.
