Hate to say this guys but ETO Army Uniforms do not fall into the Catagory of PTO USMC. Please lets not turn this into an ETO cammo discussion in a PTO thread.

Adler, That's a great find does it still work? I had some stencils made up for me this winter, nothing could beat some made on the original machine. It sure does , some of us made stencils for our footlockers and Seabags , the grenade in the pic gives you an idea of the size of the stencils

Any of us who have played airsoft in big games knows that identifying friend from foe is hard in the quick glimpse you are typically afforded even at airsoft ranges. You can imagine the confusion at 300 plus yards which is well within range of small arms. I can guarantee you that in every war fratricide by both sides is extremely common regardless what uniform you wore. Guys often blamed friendly fire on overcoats, wearing of caps, etc. That was true in all theaters and for all sides.
One of the things I truly like about historical airsoft is the unforms are more destinctive than a funky arm band. The opposition just seems that much more frightening when they are so noticeably different.
We (I) however have really sidetracked this thread and as YD says it really needs to stay focused on the PTO theater.

Gyrene, nice pics. Where did you get the t-shirts?
Heres one for you research hounds out there. Recently acquired one of the doron plate armor modified p41 utilities. Rumor has it a unit on okinawa was issued them for trial wear but have been unable to find out which unit. (pics will be up soon.)

gyrene, your suppositions on the 2nd being identified as the recievers are the same questions they are asking on the military equipment forums. There seems to be a firm belief they were issued on Okinawa but no one seems to be able to pin down where/who/when they were issued to. So until confirmation it seems they are a rumor.
I am hoping to find some contract number records that may tell me something. Also hoping to find pictures of the actual doron plates so I can try to recreate them so if anyone finds any phots of doron plates please let me know.

Was the vet who mentioned it serve after ww2 at all? like the mid50's-60's? Because in 1955 the USMC created the "Vest, Protective, Fragmentation, M1955" which was a flak-jacket that had hard Doron plates...
If not. Then I'm totally lost!

Tommygunner & myself just did a USMC presentation last week for a modeling group and one of it's members is a Marine and served on Okinawa (among many other islands). He chimed in when TG & myself were running through the different types of uniforms that an "experimental" P41 type uniform had armor plating in it. I have seen pictures and have hear more than one Marine talk of the "bullet proof" jackets.

here are the pics of the jacket. Interesting to note the drawstring at the waist and the pen slot on the pocket. No markings on the jacket. I was hoping for a tag or some such. The plates were tied in. Glenn has shots of some with button in plates. Should anyone find out some examples of what doron plates looked like let me know. I would like to fake some plates for it to finish it out. From the outside it would be hard to tell from a P41 jacket. This is the only example I have seen with a drawstring (haven't really looked hard though.) The only thing I would think would give it away in period photos would be the plates making funny shapes under the fabric.

Troy,
I have a M-1955 Flak Vest that I am not currently using. I am sure the doron plates were similar from the 1940's to the 1960's. Shoot me a PM if you want the vest, or just the plates for that matter.

What unit was he with? And how long was he in the Corps? Where did you find the pictures of Marines using the Doron plated utilities in WWII and can you post them? His Name is Joe Levato and he was with the 2nd USMC Div and served from 43-45. He was on Okinawa and when we were talking about our uniforms he chimmed in not only saying that he had seen guys that had them but he had worn one at one point and though it was uncomfortable. They had been used at the very end of the campaign he said. I have never heard of these jackets being used until Joe mentioned them and thus I have personally never looked for pictures of them. I have known Joes for several years and he really knows his stuff. TommyGunner

In an effort to add to the general unit inventory..... What is the proper flare/signal device for USMC? I have looked over all the books and can't find any mention. Have found an an-m8 (army air-corps standard), a USN model from 1915 that was equipped on PT boats and the M9 hand launcher (single shot). Any photos or QM listings would be greatly appreciated.

I would imagine that the flare gun used by the Army or a navy type flare gun would be what the USMC would have used.

The militaria forum guys are saying that for army QM lists indicated one M8 was issued per company for purposes of marking, illum, smoke, etc. Wether this was the same for USMC no one can find.

Is that a Korean Impression?, I ask because of the bayonet lug. Looks nice though!

It's not really an impression so much as we were copying a famous photo. I wasn't about the hack the bayonet lug off the gun for the photo. It's a '43 inland barrel and the serial number matches the date, so I'm going to guess the lug was added sometime later as a retrofit of ww2 rifles. 4-43 doesn't seem "late war" to me. The shirt is actually a VN jacket, but turned sideways and in b/w you can't tell. I think all in all it came out pretty good.

Looks good, didn't even notice it was a jungle jacket. Probably could have rolled up the sleeves though.
