We cracked the enigma code and invented the computer which effectively neutralised German signals and the u boat fleet. Well, it wasnt just the Brits who worked on Enigma. The Poles also had a huge had in breaking it.

Funnily enough i was just about to edit my post to correct it to the Poles capturing Enigma... which just goes to strengthen my 'no one could do it alone' argument.

The US did it by itself. You know this Gadge why are we even debating it? We simply used your little island as jump off point right? Oh and I'm still waiting for Downing Street to take point on that whole Vietnam thing. Get on that for me will ya.

Pffft... we all know it was Easy Company 506th PIR 101st Airborne that won the war single handed. In fact, Dick Winters could have done it with his eyes closed.

I think it would have been trickier without 'Cpt Hanks' and his Rangers though.

On a serious note and sort of going back to my 'what folk offered' point. One thing American involvement did offer the allies is fire and drive.
Britain was pretty drained not only of resources and manpower but of energy to bring the battle home. A lot of our lads had been fighting solid for three years and not seen home for as long.
Fresh trained enthusiastic American soldiers not only created a new source of skilled troops but also revitalised an allied army as they were so eager to get stuck in.
Britain has often been criticised by many Americans of being overly cautious (Montgomery especially), this is largely because of the vast amount of casualties and deaths experienced by most veteran soldiers making them less enthusiastic about risky decisions (and in war one *must* take risks at times )
A classic example would be the Highland Division in Europe performing much poorer than everyone expected given their incredible feats in the western desert... the reason being most of the jocks felt they had done their bit and didnt want to die in the last days of the war having seen most of thier mates cop it
So i'll say one definite advantage of America joining the allies was a picking up of pace and a much needed boost in vitality.
I think thats fair to say!

I think it was amazing how 27 million russians died fighting the germans that didnt have a quarter of those men fighting, imagine what would of happened if germany kept its treaty with russia and was able to send all that manpower to normandy and italy, and maybe england. with the manpower in russia on normandy the landing would have been almost impossible.

and remember look at a map of the world, you can easily see the united states, and russia, the main people fighting germany. then lets switch sides try to find germany italy and japan on the map... their quite small on the map compaired to the others, and they put up a great fight against people who outnumbered them 1000 to 1!
