This is a true piece of art, and geniousness! What is used as the bolt? Looks like a door knob or something similar. Still, very nice!

Awesome! Any chance of step-by step build instructions?
I have 2 of the £20 shotguns - they are great guns for the money but I'd never have thought of using it for a conversion!

So I had one of those shotguns laying around so I though I would take a swing at it. First try was a Fail. I couldn't make the cut out in the middle that goes all the way trough. I ended up snapping the outside edge. How did you make this cut? A little jig saw, screw driver and a hammer snapped the out side edge and I also broke my saw blade in half. So what should I do to try again??

Although a really old thread it is so thought provoking and inspirational that I thought Id comment on it and give it a sticky. Gryphon really touched on an approach that steps out of the traditional and provides an affordable entry into customized work. Make no mistake about it. His skill and knowledge about materials and mold making are the key to the projects success. For a skirmishable weapon if you are able to manage the project with a cheap double eagle type shotty, step up to the more elaborate upgradable, quality shotguns and you'd be on par with the VSR type conversions.
Any airsoft weapon that has to be cocked each time is going to be at a disadvantage compared to an AEG but their presents contributes greatly to an immersive and authentic tactical environment. One thought i had would be to connect the cocking action to a sling mount that could follow a slotted channel at the bottom of the stock forearm. You could grasp the sling end with your non firing hand and cock the rifle quickly while pointed down range. This could generate sufficient rate of fire to increase your competiveness while still proving a nice overall look. The bolt and receiver group would be cosmetic.

I have two questions about this, firstly, how did it hold up? Does the cheap springer last long enough to be a good thing to keep around, or do they brake? You said you made 4 of them for them for loaner guns? How many broke so far? Aside from that, where did you get the shotgun that cheap? I'm planning to do almost exactly this, though modeled after a Mannlicher M1895 under the logic that i want to do a ww1 game if ever given the chance, and it being still somewhat valid for ww2 games, as it saw second line use in ww2. Also, a straight pull fits the action of the gun it's made from. Thirdly, because i just thought of it, how would you load this? Does the magazine come out or what? Does anyone know of a better choice which would load from roughly the right place?

I can't talk about how well these hold up, but like the OP said, if something breaks, the main gun is cheap enough to just replace. Although, you can find higher quality shotguns that act the same.
The straight pull is something that the real life Mosin-Nagants don't have, its a compromise for practicality in an airsoft gun.
The magazine does remove and that is where the base shotgun feeds from. Unfortunately, with most bolt actions in airsoft, they don't load where their real life counterpart loads from. This, again, is a compromise for practicality.

Again a reminder that this thread came out in September of 2007. Eight years ago!!!!!
Gryphons concept has inspired many DIY projects with varying levels of success. None as clean, functional and gorgeous as the originals. The pictures and notes on the first page of the thread should give you all the details you might need to create your own. Of upon reading the posts and viewing the pictures you are still not clear how to do this. THIS PROJECT or one like it is NOT ONE you probably want to take on.
I made a cheap springer carbine following this concept but using an actual carbine stock and upper handguard. I posted all the details in a seperate thread. No sooner did I get it done but the CYMA Carbine came out and thankfully rendered the project moot as the CYMA carbine is fabulous and about the same money. It has long been my hope that a similar situation would occure with an affordable Kar 98, Arisaka, Enfield etc but alas such is not the case. Maybe in another eight years.
The modifications to the cocking handle if done well no doubt proved durable unless a stronger spring is added. Gryphon modified his original approach with an improved and simpler design. Therein lies the rub because with the normal spring even with the spacer your FPS remains in the vicinity of 300 FPS. A bit too weak for a single shot bolt action rifle in a skirmish. The other thing to be mindful of is the level of skill and tools Gryphon has to effectively execute this project. Its inspirational and extremely creative but not practical for the average Do It Yourselfer. Especially folks who have never attempted such things.
I love this thread as it reflects the spirit of this section in the forum. Hopefully if others have taken on this approach and made their own discoveries We'd all love to see your efforts so please do share. Lots of input that others did something with it but no pictures! If you do take this on please please please share your results.

The Mannlicher M95 straight pull seems like a natural for this. Good luck with it. Post pics.

Though an old thread much has changed since this project (seven years ago). today there are a multitude of inexpensive but powerful springer shotguns to choose from. currently Airsoft Megastore has a couple deals going on some offerings that look worth considering. There is a DE 870 springer that proports to shoot 340 to 380 FPS right out of the box and while that is 12 gram, a 20 gram BB should still chrono at 320 to 340.
the price on these with the current discout is well under $20.00! At around $65.00 a A&K shotgun was said to consistently chrono (with .20 grams) at around 400 FPS while remaining easy to cock. Using Gryphons approach the bolt action would not be true to a WW2 action (other than the Manlicher and Japanse Arisaka but still might present a viable project. I have a bunch of SMLE bits laying about and may want to give this a go.
If it works and indeed shoots in the vicinity of 400 FPS this could be quite a boon to the DIY community.
