Nice Red, shame how events prior to D-Day are much less common. I like how the rigger-pouches are moved to the rear of the belt, very authentic. In fact, I have several pictures taken during sicily that show them directly in teh back of the belt.

2nd: Yeah, I know the story. I actually do have leggings and service shoes, but these "paratrooper/ranger" boots were also used by other personnel. In this particular event I just liked these more...

Cary the 5th rangers were issued jump boots and used them well up to VE-day you are thinking about the m-1942 jump jackets that were first "taken" from the 501st then "taken" back from the rangers!

I think what Cary is thinking of was how the Airborne guys stole the jump boots from the Rangers because they didn't think the Rangers earned them and the Rangers stole them back.

Red You also weren't the only one to tell me about the jump boots though too.. I believe I talked to Chaser about it after you told me about it. Well I guess the story just got bunged up somewhere. -Cary

I keep hearing about jump boots and 42's being reclaimed from the rangers by the airborne, but I have never seen any documentation for either. I know that the vets have told us that the airborne wasnt happy about rangers having the jackets or the boots, though....

your right he is the only one to keep his i was told he got wind of them being collected and stashed it in fact john hatfield is trying to get it! Cody now thats awesome!!!! did you know about S/Sgt Calabresi? C Co, 5th Rangers? smg.photobucket.com/albums/v13/srguenther/scans/?action=view¤t=5thranger.jpgfrom L to R: Pfc Charles Minor, S/Sgt Zordo Calabresi; Pfc Peter Stump, Pfc Henry Stone Stump was killed during the Saar campaign and Minor was killed during the Irsch-Zerf Campaign. All four landed with the 5th on D-day. I keep noticing something new everytime I look at this photo: The pants appear to be blowsed a little differently, there are two guys with sidearms in shoulder holsters (sidearms alone wasnt too common, but the shoulder holsters are even less common), and Stone is wearing gloves - the only pic (that I know of)of a 5th ranger wearing any. There was another guy with a 42 jacket but there is no pic of him that I know of - he volunteered for the 5th in March/April of 45 after breaking a leg on a jump. Ranger Herder remembers volunteering at the same time, but only remembers him as a para/sgt and not which division he was from....

I know that once I saw a pic of an infantry LT or Cpt wearing them in Italy, but I cant remember where I saw the pic....

Plus if you went threw ranger training you got them. This is how most of the 4th officers picked them up as the 4th was big on sending its officers to the school in england. But it still does not mean you can wear them we are to be portraying the norm not the exception.

I wear them, but thats under leggins ;-) i just dont have the money yet to buy a pair of service shoes, and since the jump boots look just like the Type I service shoes they work for the time being. I never knew that about the 4th sending officers to Ranger school. Thats pretty interesting. -Cary

why do people think that if you put jump boots under leggings that its fine? the heel is different (ramp heel as opposed to a squared heel )there is not ankle reinforcing and the eyelets for the laces are to far apart. yes i know its a small thing but we should strive to be the most authentic we can be to say thats far enough and park it!! OK my rant for the day is over and i will get off my soapbox ha ha

they work for the time being -Cary i know there are differences... but right now i have other priorities.... and boots just arent one of them... I mean its better then work boots, which i have seen some people use. Its close enough for now, and in the field... does it really matter. Sure when i have the money I will buy a pair. Ill get an M1 first... then maybe ill spend the money on boots. -Cary

I know that once I saw a pic of an infantry LT or Cpt wearing them in Italy, but I cant remember where I saw the pic.... Plenty of people had them. They were often lost in card games, bartered for other things or stolen outright. Bill Mauldin was officially presented a pair of his own jump boots by the 509th PIR for a cartoon he did addressing this very issue. In that cartoon, two 'leg' generals are walking past a surly looking paratrooper by a light post. One leans over and whispers to the other, "It's best not to speak to Paratroopers about saluting - they always ask where you got your jump boots." I actually have a snapshot of Mauldin in a Jeep wearing the boots that the grateful 509th guys sent him. Also, many of the Army's Amphibious Forces were issued jump boots as they were the footwear that best kept beach sand out of their troops' feet when conducting operations in the surf. I looked on line and in a few moments found these photos from the 4th Engineer Special Brigade (Amphibious). The other photo shows them wearing jump boots with their summer tans before they went overseas! www.geocities.com/kirkhoff_77062/dad/Guys1.jpgwww.geocities.com/kirkhoff_77062/dad/Lefthalf.jpg
