Well I took the rifle down to the snowed in baseball field today because I knew there would be no one about and I could do some distance testing of the gun. It was almost dead calm, a light breeze at my back. Set the target up at 50 feet and let 5 fly- Walked up to inspect the damage, not one hit. Went back, reloaded, let my Son have a go- once again no hits on target. This time, when I loaded and fired instead of pointing directly at the target, I elevated a bit, and took my eye off the sights so I could watch the bb- Finally a hit on the target- but I noticed that the bb had a pronounced 'arc'. I did the same for the next 4, loaded again and let my Son shoot, then went and inspected the target. so...basically, the accuracy and range from the stock spring, with hop-up as far engaged as possible......sucks sad.gif It seems to be consistantly shooting left, and dropping around 40 feet out- you can see in the pic of the target, those shots were fired from 50ft, with about a 5 inch elevation over the target plate. I am going to take it to my Gun Dr. and see what magic he may be able to pull out of his hat- more on this later. If anybody else has had a chance to range test the gun, that information is valuable and welcomed. I'd like to hear that others have had much better results than I have so far without altering the stock weapon. Slainte!

Had mine out in the garage today to check the consistancy of the home made round against the round provided. No appreciable difference but no rounds from either would lodge in the hard foam insulation I use as a backing, this at 5 yds. Groups were pretty wide too. I be interested to hear what the gun Dr. has to say.

Hey Jim how ya been?
I have been remiss in traveling up your way!
I'm interested in your work on the 8mm brass- hopefully first of the year I can make it up there and finally help you master the art of posting pics!

That sounds very much in line with the kind of performance I was expecting from this gun. That is to say pretty poor. Still the intial reporst were quite encouraging. Your testing splashes water on the hopes and dreams of many but it still sounds like a fun, inside the garage plinker.
A pie plate at 50 feet where you have to aim five inches above is pretty awful. Yikes Are you sure it was 50 feet and not 50 paces?

Off topic, but Guinness what kind of camera do you use? The photos you take are top notch...and I know it cant all be because of the photographer

Guinness - thanks for taking the time to do such a thorough report. Your weathering is very effective and it sure is pretty. I was wondering too about whether or not the parts would work on real steel guns. That would be a cheap way to get some hard to find parts. I'm thinking of the barrel bands and the butt plate and stock disks here. Oh well, I'm not planning any more conversions right now anyway with $80 Chinese clones available. Someone will figure out a way to increase their velocity and their ammo load out so I figure the market has solved another airsoft shortage. I wonder what their next offering is going to be? It seems as if they have the ability to one of these days come out with a skirmishable weapon that will sell like hotcakes. Just wondering when they will market research properly and do it.

G. That really has been worked to an art form. It looks amazingly good for a gun that you're in less then $200.00. I love the metal treatment as well as the "wood" work.
The performance results are unfortunately dissapointing . A rifle you have to cock each time really needs to be able to hit a pie plate every shot at 120 feet or more. IMO To say nothing of needing shells.
As I suspected all along a fun garage plinker for knocking down 6 inch army men. It looks way better then I would have expected. (Especially after your magic) and it shoots somewhat worse then I would have expected.
The price is sure right and it'll be great for posing between games with for pictures.

Nice review G man (as usual of course) Dissapointing news though I still have the old Marushin this was copied from and although it only shoots around 290 FPS it is reasonably accurate. I suspect with a fair bit of tinkering it may be possible to get decent performance from this gun. But with the expense of replacing barrels, hop ups etc.. Might as well just buy a Tanaka or a conversion. Your pictures are always great, I'm sure you have a keen eye for photography. Schmitty

Valtteri, admit it. You have always tried to go after the kills! ;D Anyway, it could still be fun for some more humoristic events, or more role-playing oriented ones. We had here a hilarious game with many different "gangs", like punks, the homeless, rednecks and the law was upheld by the twisted Gestapo-organization . Our group was the homeless. We had all kinds of crappy guns. I had a Tanaka Luger that jammed occasionally, one had a POS Marushin revolver, and our leader had a gas shotgun. The Chinese 98k would have been awesome there. Too bad this kind of games are quite rare. But for more serious gaming, it should definitely be mated with a VSR or APS. Of course if someone would be able to make a magazine for it, I think there would be no other alternative but to buy it.

I found one of these on GunsnGuys but it was listed as 8mm, I emailed them to check and apparently their model does fire 8mm, unfortunately its still a shell loading one

That has to be the second generation Marushin Kar 98 currently in production. Real wood stock I believe but more expensive and sadly not any more competitive functionally or at least not much.

Well as I see it, there are 3 possibilities-
1. It is the first Chinese clone gun to stray off the clone pattern and make something new- That would be because Marushin never made a spring or 'Air Cocking' 8mm version of the KAR98- Just the 8mm Maxi-SSB which was (and is still) a gas bolt system. And uses cartridges
Odds: Not likely
2. It's mistakenly reported as 'Air Cocking' and it's actually a copy of the Marushin mentioned above, which means it's gas and it still uses shells.
Odds: More likely
3. It's mistakenly reported as 8mm and it's actually the 6mm DBoyi that everybody else has. This would still make it a Marushin copy and the same gun that all the other dealers have. Now I have seen Guns N Guys have 'exclusive' product before, so the 8mm product is still a possibility, but IMHO rather doubtful.
Odds: Most likely
Dealers have been have been mistaken before- it seems to happen with RedWolf more than the others however- remember they reported the new M1 Carbine as being 'Air Cocking' and even photoshopped the cocking handle into the new M1 Carbine GBB picture when they first got them in- it took a couple of weeks for them to finally admit the were wrong. As an aside, RW is advertising the re-release of the Marushin M500 shotgun in black as having "Ghost Ring Sights" as if that is a new feature- So Dealers can get it wrong pretty easily.
I'd love to think that there is in fact a new 8mm clone of the KAR98 out there, but when they say its Air Cocking, that just settles it right there for me- If it is 8mm and spring, then it's not a clone of any other gun and it's a new design, that seems pretty unlikely to me. So one of their claims is incorrect- either its not a spring powered gun and its is 8mm and Gas powered, or its not 8mm at all and it's the same gun we have seen.
Of course I could be wrong, GnG is charging $141 USD for this gun- , I still think we would have heard of a new 8mm Spring gun somewhere
....somebody buy one already!
Slainte!

master the art of posting pics! If that is an art (which in your case it seems so), then I am most definitely a starving artist Thanks for the continued progress and review on your Kar98, for what you paid for it sure seems like a honey.

Ok, ready for 'Bonehead Admission #369' from 'ol Guinness? There is a very good possibility that the problem with the K98 is of my own making- Big surprise huh? When I received the gun I think I mentioned that it had the usual Chinese gunk-grease on the magazine follower and in the receiver- Well when I tore it down for inspection and photos, I dutifully re-greased it. Only I used spray White Lithium grease from Home Depot- Now in and of itself that grease is quality stuff I am told- for gear boxesSo this n00b will be cleaning his rifle very thoroughly and using Silicone spray this time this coming weekend and re testing the gun over the holidays ;D Hey- at least I happily admit when I'm a doofus- Slainte!

Doofus two reprting. I posted that my 98 was not penetrating the insulation when in fact it was, to about a 1/2". Accuracy was still poor but I was concentrating on how the "roll your own" shells were working. Doofus 2 will stay in touch.

Ok, followup on the "8mm Chinese KAR98" report-
I have two sources confirm for me that GnG is mistaken- Johnny at Boomarms confirmed that there is only the 6mm product on the market, and another friend of mine that lives there confirmed that the GnG product is actually 6mm by going and seeing it.
Oh well, it would have been cool and who knows, since they seem to be copying Marushin product, we will probably see a full wood, gas 8mm KAR98 soon.
Slainte!

why would we be seeing guiness and his son on cnn? Not because he and his son are shooting a realistic weapon in a public place. Not that at all, its because G and his son just won the lotto and they are going to be on the 6 o'clock news.

Wow. I guess I have to think through what I post. As suggested by Jager Dru. The idea of shooting a realistic looking rifle in what I'm sure wasn't a school yard in of all places Colorado is fraught with potential for significant negative repercusions. I KNOW Guinness wasn't in a school yard so it was intended as a joke.
Yikes!
